Last year (2017), from January untill March, we (my husband and I) decided to do The Elimination Diet.
That’s a kind of diet that allows you to find out what foods are making you sick.
Why did we decide to do it
I have Allergic Rhinitis and my husband started to have Eczema, something he had never had. I always felt that some foods do me harm, but never had the trouble to find out which ones.
Then, I came across the book The Elimination Diet by Alissa Segersten and Tom Malterre and decided it was time to do it.
So, how does The Elimination Diet work?
Discover the foods that are making you sick
Firstly, you have to refrain from eating several foods that people usually react to.
These foods are such as: Gluten (Barley, Wheat and Rye), Dairy products, Soy, Eggs, Nuts and many others.
Secondly, you have to reintroduce the different foods one by one and feel how your body reacts.
To better understand how the food you reintroduce is interacting with you should make a register of the food you eat and how do you feel after eating it, so keeping a Journal is quite essential.
Since you have to be careful with what you eat, it is easier to cook the food at home during that period. If you have to eat out ask about the ingredients the restaurant uses to make the food, or phone ahead and ask them not to use certain foods in your meal.
I must say I found this diet harder to do than I thought, but if you make a weekly meal plan it is possible and very rewarding.
Remember, you are investing in your health. So, 3 months of your life doing this is worth the effort.
You should also choose to buy organic products. The pesticides and herbicides of conventional farming can be doing you harm. Organic products are without a doubt healthier and more nutritious.
Although we followed the diet only through the book, I think the best option is to find a nutritionist or even a doctor than helps you deal with issues that sometimes arise.
It is also better if you don’t do it alone, it is easier if you have someone to talk to about the food you are eating and compare notes, but remember that people are different and you may react to something that your partner won’t.
Luckily, my husband was willing to do it as well, which made it easier because I could cook at home the same food for both of us.
At the end of three months I lost 4 kg and my husband lost 7 kg which was ok because neither one of us had much to lose. For me these 4 kg was the fat that didn’t want to go away. But for my husband the 7 kg was a bit too much because he is a lean person.
Each one of us reacted differently to food, but both of us felt that there are foods to which our body reacted and now we try to avoid them.
I react mainly to Wheat and my husband reacted to Corn.
Have you tried a diet like this one? Do you think it may help you?
